Silverton (Town) adopted 6 April 1926 on Geological Survey sheet 200A, as labelled on BC map 1EM, 1915. Incorporated as a Village Municipality 6 May 1930. Silverton (Village) confirmed 6 October 1955 on 82 SW. Boundary amendment effective 4 November 1993; confirmed 13 July 1994 on 82 F/14.

When surveyed in 1893 the townsite was called Four-Mile City, so-named in association with Four-Mile Creek which flows through it. Silverton Post Office was opened 1 June 1894, so-called after the silver mines in the area (Imperial Oil Review, April 1948).
