Cooper Creek (settlement) adopted 9 June 1960 on 82K, as identified in the 1930 BC Gazetteer, and as labelled on Department of Interior map, Kootenay, 1936. Form of name changed to Cooper Creek (community) 15 July 1983 on 82K/2.

CPR stations were originally located at Lardeau and La Blanche, 4 miles north and 4 miles south of here, respectively. Cooper Creek Station was opened sometime after WW I. Station closed when CPR line was abandoned (July 1946?). Cooper Creek Post Office was opened 1 August 1950.
