Porto Rico (settlement) adopted 2 March 1948 on 82F/6, as identified in the 1909 BC Gazetteer, and in Geological Survey of Canada Summary Report 1911, p.139, and as labelled on BC Mineral Reference Map 4, Nelson & Trail Creek, 1929. Form of name changed to Porto Rico (locality) 5 March 1959.

The Porto Rico mineral claim was staked west of here in 1896: "The Canadian Pacific Exploration Co. Ltd, Eng., is opening up [the "Porto Rico" property] on the North Fork of Salmon River [since re-named Barrett Creek/Salmo River]. A road seven miles long has been built from the N&FSRR, and three tunnels on the vein, now aggregate 700 feet of work. Good buildings have been erected. A shipment of 41 tons was recently made to the smelter at Trail, which is reported to have yielded $76.25 per ton in gold..." (BC Mines Report, 1987, p.531) Origin/significance of name not recorded.

Porto Rico Station so-labelled on Geological Survey of Canada map 792, West Kootenay, 1904. "Porto Rico, a flag station and lumber camp on the Nelson & Fort Sheppard branch of the Great Northern Railway, 23 miles south of Nelson." (1909 BC Gazetteer). Porto Rico Post Office was opened 16 May 1918 situated on Lot 1238, Sec 34, Tp 36, Kootenay Land District, being the northwest side of the junction of Barrett Creek and Salmo River, adjacent to the Salmon Valley Lumber Co. bldgs. Port Rico Post Office closed 22 May 1926 after a series of forest fires forced the closure of forestry/lumbering activities.
