"Rosebery (Post Office, Railway Station & Steamer Landing, population 100)" adopted in the 1930 BC Gazetteer, as labelled on BC map 1EM, 1915 et seq. Rosebery (Station & Steamer Landing) confirmed 1 March 1956; form of name changed to Rosebery (Locality) 20 March 1989 on 82K/3.
Rosebery Post Office was opened 1 September 1895; closed & re-opened several times before closing 1 September 1951. Was located in NW 1/4 of L298. Mis-spelled "Roseberry" in Post Offices of British Columbia by G.H. Melvin, 1965.
Named after Sir Archibald Philip Primrose, Viscount of Rosebery, one-time a director of the CPR; Foreign Secretary in 1886; Prime Minister of Great Britain in 1894 and 1895. "The townsite at the mouth of Wilson Creek on Slocan Lake has been named Rosebery in honour of the Prime Minister of Great Britain" (The Tribune, 24 April 1894).
