Salmo (Town) adopted 3 November 1932 on Geological Survey sheet 283A, as labelled on BC map 1EM, 1915. Incorporated as a Village Municipality 30 October 1946. Salmo (Village) confirmed 6 October 1955 on 82/SW.
This location is labelled as "Laprairie" on Perry's Mining Map of Southern District of West Kootenay, 1893. See also the municipality's own website.
Salmo Post Office was opened 1 May 1897, Robert Ince postmaster. After the genus, Salmo, of fish, in association with the adjacent river, long-identified as "Salmon River".
Salmo is the Latin word for "salmon". The Salmo River is referred to as the "Salmon River" as early as 1859. The settlement first began as Salmon Siding, during the building of the Nelson and Fort Shepherd Railway.
