Origin Notes and History of Agate
References to Agate that document the origin of its place name
Adopted 6 October 1936 as a Railway Point on Canadian Geological map 408A (file A.1.36); resubmitted and application altered 16 January 1958 on 92I/6; form of name changed to Agate (Locality) 4 May 1979.
Agate, a flag stop on the railway between Spendes Bridge and Merritt, was so named from the fact that agates are found in the creek which flows from the west into the Nicola River at that point. (The Nicola Valley in Review, Vol 1, 1958, p.16.)
Possibly named after E.T. Agate, a CPR District Engineer (Nicola Valley Archives Association, Vol 1, No.2, April 1978)
