Origin Notes and History of Six Mile Ranch
References to Six Mile Ranch that document the origin of its place name
Adopted 15 April 2009 on 92I/10, as a well-established local name and landmark.
Six Mile Ranch originally extended for several miles along the south side of Kamloops Lake, named because of proximity to Six Mile Point, in turn named during the early fur trade as a navigational landmark on Kamloops Lake. Six Mile Ranch - a thriving cattle operation for many years - was sold to investors in the mid-1980s then resold to developers in the early 1990s, and has since been partially repurposed to include the 151 hectare Six Mile Hill Protected Area and the recreational community known as Tobiano. Six Mile Ranch is still a working ranch with 200 head of cattle, hayfields, etc, operating within a smaller footprint.
