Named by or after the Collett family, longtime residents at Merritt. John H. Collett (1871-1945), purchased Lot 126 from James Chapman in 1906, and in 1909 subdivided a portion of the Collett Ranch for sale as town lots. Named after the Collett family who have lived in the Merritt area since 1897 or earlier. In 1904 John H. Collett purchased the holdings of James Chapman (Lots 126, 173 & 176?), and in 1909 subdivided a portion of the property for sale as town lots. Water Record 709, 24 August 1910, indicates that Joseph Collett owned about 6,000 acres, including Lots 1143, 1144, 1145, 1146 & 1147.
