Origin Notes and History of Vavenby
References to Vavenby that document the origin of its place name
Vavenby (Post Office and Station) identified in the 1930 BC Gazetteer. Vavenby (Post Office) confirmed 21 November 1962 for map 82M/12. Form of name changed to Vavenby (community) 15 March 1983 on 82M/12.
"Daubney Pridgeon, rancher, suggested the post office name Navenby, after his birthplace in Lincolnshire. He wrote the N like a V so postal authorities gave the name Vavenby. Vavenby Post Office was established 1 June 1910, Archibald McCorvie postmaster. The CNR station was located 2 1/2 miles east, due to a quarrel between McCorvie and CNR engineer Chamberlain over price of land."
Called "Peavine Flat" in the early days, before the name Vavenby was established. (Muriel Dunford, North River: The Story of British Columbia's North Thompson Valley & Yellowhead Highway 5; Sonotek Publishing, Merritt, BC.)
